How to pay parking with a rental car — step by step

The process is the same whether you're in a hire car or your own vehicle.

Find the zone code

Look for the blue or green parking sign. The zone code (e.g. '1A', 'Zone 2', 'P7') is displayed prominently. Take a photo — you'll need it.

Choose your payment method

Download the city's parking app (RTA app for Dubai, ADPC app for Abu Dhabi) or use the physical machine. SMS parking (mParking) works without an app.

Pay and set your duration

Enter your rental car's plate number, select duration and pay. Use your international Visa or Mastercard — accepted everywhere.

Set an expiry reminder

Use our parking timer at yallaparkpay.com or your phone alarm. Set it 15 minutes before expiry to give yourself time to extend or return.

Save your receipt

Screenshot your e-receipt or take a photo of the machine receipt. Keep them until you return the rental car and receive your deposit back.

Fine transferred to your credit card

High impact

Rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget etc.) register as the vehicle owner with UAE authorities. When a parking fine is issued to the plate, it appears in the company's account. The rental company then charges it to the credit card you used to book — often weeks after you've returned home.

Admin fee on top of the fine

High impact

Most UAE rental companies charge an administrative processing fee of AED 50–200 for each fine they receive and pass on to you. This is in addition to the actual fine amount. Check your rental agreement's fine clause before signing.

Security deposit deduction

Medium impact

Fines received during your rental period may be deducted from your security deposit before it's returned. The security deposit hold period (typically 7–21 days) ensures the company can collect any outstanding fines.

No exit at airport if fines are unpaid

Rare

In rare cases involving multiple unpaid fines linked to a rental company's registered plate, airport exit may be flagged. This is more common with expired vehicle registrations than individual parking fines, but awareness is important.

Rental car parking — do's and don'ts

Follow these rules and you'll never receive a parking fine in a rental car.

Pay parking immediately using the zone's official payment method (app, SMS, machine)

Set a timer reminder for 10–15 minutes before your parking expires

Keep all parking receipts — digital and paper — for the duration of your trip

Take a photo of your parked car with the zone sign visible on arrival

Download the relevant city parking app before you drive (RTA, ADPC, SRTA)

Park in 'Residents Only' or 'Permit Holders Only' bays — fines are AED 200–400

Assume Fridays are always free — check your specific zone's signage

Ignore time-limit signs (many zones have 1–2 hour maximums even when paid)

Leave your car overnight in a metered street zone without checking if overnight rates apply

Trust that your satnav or maps app shows current parking zone information
